"Along with her honey voice, her soulful sensibility, Diana exuded
glamour and grace and filled stages that helped to shape the sound of
Motown," said President Obama as he presented Diana Ross with America's
highest civilian honour, the Medal of Freedom, yesterday. "Today, from
the hip-hop that samples her to the young singers who've been inspired
by her to the audiences that still cannot get enough of her, Diana
Ross's influence is inescapable as ever."
Of course we heartily agree with all
of the above, but there's one other detail from yesterday's award
ceremony which merits stylish consideration: the fact that Diana Ross
chose to accept her medal wearing a pair of fabulous dangling earrings
which co-ordinated perfectly with her gleaming medal and stood out
marvellously next to her that other signature of hers, the full-bodied
mane of hair.
Ross's choice of earrings was of
course a glamorous nod to a styling trick which she's employed
constantly since she burst onto the scene with The Supremes, bringing
extra glitz to her stage and
red carpet looks with a magpie-friendly
array of statement ear attire. But it also serves as brilliant
inspiration for one next Spring/Summer's easiest-to-adopt trends; the
showstopper earring. Seen everywhere from Delpozo (extravagant glass
chunks) , Proenza Schouler (sculptural shapes), Balenciaga (crystal
studded) and Celine (delicately graphic), it's guaranteed to be on your
jewellery radar early next year, but also happens to be an ideal way to
transform yourself for a Christmas drinks 'do in five minutes flat.
It's no wonder that sales of 'statement earrings' are already up by 73%
on last year according
to luxury e-tailer Avenue 32, which cites Delfina Delettrez's enamel eye mono-earring
as their most
popular and, in anticipation of the stellar rise the
earring is set to enjoy in the coming months,
freshly-founded Instagram
account @earafterear now posts a constant stream of aural decoration ideas.
