Minimize Stress.

Stress creeps into all our lives from a variety of
sources. If stress is allowed to remain in our lives for too long, it
will become a negative factor in our work productivity and daily
enjoyment of life.
If you are like most individuals, you work over forty
hours a week while balancing community engagement and a family life. If
this is true, you know there are times when stress becomes overwhelming,
and you become mentally, physically and possibly spiritually exhausted.
When this happens, it is imperative to recognize the stress and take
necessary steps to get back on track.
A huge factor that helps minimize the effects of stress on
a person is an awareness that stress exists. When you identify stress
early, you mitigate the duration of stress as well as the effects stress
can cause.
When you become exhausted due to overwork, stress and just
plain overload, you should identify a way to calm your mind, body and
spirit. I asked several people in my life how they tackle stress and
exhaustion, and the following suggestions are their solutions.
Exercise
Working out is a way to minimize the effects of stress on
your body. Exercise can relax the mind and clear the chaos that might
exist. It releases endorphins, which are proven to increase happiness.
If you exercise on a regular basis, you’ll not only feel good but also
look good.
A few women I spoke with enjoy a yoga class at the YMCA or
their local gym. They feel that regularly participating in a yoga class
calms their minds and reduces their level of stress. It is a
combination of doing something just for them, spending time with other
people and just relaxing for a period of time that makes yoga a solution
to reducing stress.
Spend time with family and loved ones
It is amazing how therapeutic having our families close to
us is. Families care and love like no other people in our lives. They
listen and offer their thoughts if asked. They typically don’t desire
anything from us but to return the love they offer. Make sure to spend
time with those you love, it’s very relaxing and might just center you
on what’s important in life.
Personal Advice
My personal favorite, choose to never have a bad day. A
good friend shared this life tactic with me over ten years ago; he died a
few weeks ago at the age of 90. His advice to me was always, “Never
have a bad day.” At the age of 90, this man mastered this tactic. His
life was filled with gratitude and selflessness. I helped him one day a
week, and whenever I would seem stressed he would ask me what I was
grateful for, when I started to make my list he would always remind me
that it’s difficult to have a bad day when you have so many things for
which to be grateful.
Change what is causing you stress
If you routinely find yourself stressed to the max you may
want to assess certain aspects of your life. Believe it or not, some
people thrive on stress. If this is you, you are right where you need to
be. If this isn’t you, then you should take a close look at various
aspects of your life. Maybe it is your work or home life. If you find
there are some factors that cause you to maintain a high level of
stress, you may want to consider changing these factors.
If it’s your work, you should talk with your employer. If
it’s financial, you should update your monthly budget plan that aligns
with your goals/expenses. If it’s family, talk with them—what will it
hurt? If it’s too much on your plate, step back from a few things. If
it’s your health, see a doctor and take better care of yourself.
Ultimately, if you are stressed, you need to identify how
to balance your mind and body so that you can enjoy your work, community
and family. If you stay out-of-balance for too long, your family, work
and social life will suffer, and you will be unhappy. Be watchful of
those around you, too. Encourage others to reduce stress in their lives.
Let’s help each other enjoy life a little more!
