former Metropolitan police officer who protected Tony Blair and other
politicians was killed when a van hit him 200 metres from the finish
line during a cycling race.
Ian Bashford, 60, was competing with his friend Peter Gray in the 35th Duo Normand race in Marigny, northern France, when he was struck by a race support vehicle.
French police are investigating the death. The 27-year-old driver of the van was taken to hospital suffering from shock.
