For better or worse, 2016 was a big year for women on the world stage.
Whether they were taking high political office, winning Olympic gold
medals, tackling the pay gap or encouraging young girls to follow their
dreams - there was no shortage of inspiration.
“My pitch is very simple. I'm Theresa May and I think I'm the best person to be prime minister of this country.”
June, Theresa May enters the Tory leadership race. A month later, she enters 10 Downing
Street as Britain's second female Prime Minister.

“We don’t need to be married or mothers to be complete. We get to determine our own “happily
ever after” for ourselves.”
4.
In a personal and powerful concession speech,
delivered hours after Donald Trump declared victory in the US election,
Hillary Clinton had a special message for women and girls:
"For all the women - especially the young women, who put your faith
in me - I want you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be
your champion.
"Now I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest
glass ceiling - but someday someone will, and hopefully sooner than we
might think right now.
"And to all the little girls who are watching this: never doubt that
you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance in the world
to pursue your dreams."
5.
On being independent...
"I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas,
but what I decided to do was
to fulfil my profession which I entered
before my husband was in public life."
6.
On sexism...
"If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle."
7.
On being a woman in politics...
"You know what, if fighting for affordable child care and paid family leave is playing
the 'woman card,' then deal me in."
8.
On the work/life balance...
"Don’t confuse having a career with having a life."
9.
On female ambition...
"Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe
in. And, when you stumble,
keep faith. And, when you’re knocked down,
get right back up and never listen to anyone who says
you can’t or
shouldn’t go on."
10.
On boys being the future, too...
"Standing here as my mother's daughter, and my daughter's mother, I'm
so happy this day has come.
Happy for grandmothers and little girls and
everyone in between. Happy for boys and men, too –
because when any
barrier falls in America, for anyone, it clears the way for everyone."
